5 Top Speeches

I got to go to the Scottish Cycling offices last Sunday and give my best crack at blowing the minds of the current juniors.

Mind blowing wasn't actually the official remit, but one I'd taken on after being invited to speak. I thought "Hey, I'm going to stand in front of 30 people who have to listen to me? Well I better say some shit that gets them thinking." HARDER THAN YOU'D EXPECT. I brain stormed all of the my best and favourite inspirational quotes, but the only one that made the cut (and had to be said slightly ironically) was:

"Whether you believe you can, or believe you can't, you are absolutely right." (Henry Ford)

So yeah, I kind of surrendered my ambition to blow minds and spoke on topics that were relevant and unboring* and I gather that was enough to be a success. Or maybe my one inspirational quote (said ironically but meant totally seriously) was what saved the entire thing? I'm not sure. What I do know is that the people in my list below have given some awesome speeches so I wanted to share them.

1. Tim Minchin's Graduation Ceremony speech
Tim Minchin also makes my list of fav people. This speech is gloriously funny yet heart-breakingly (real word) touching. You must watch it both for entertainment value and life reflecting purposes.

2. Emma Watson's 'He for She' speech
Is it too obvious to put this in here? Do I care?

3. Baz Luhrmann: Everybody's Free (To Wear Suncream)
Kind of funny, kind of cool, kind of catchy.

4. The Sperm Whale and The Bowl of Petunias
Technically not a speech? Extract from one of my favourite books - The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy - and so had to make the list. Features, again, humour and insight... is this possibly a theme?

5. SO MUCH OTHER STUFF
I think I've made it apparent in past posts that I spend afternoons going through TED talks videos. Another of my favourite youtube channels is RSA who have a series of speeches that they've done animation to which are brilliant!

So please do go waste away your Sunday** like I do: reading about, listening to and watching other people's lives/ambitions/ideas etc. before having to go about living your own on Monday.

*'unboring' is second cousin to 'exciting' in the adjective family.
**okay today is a Tuesday but it's a rest day for me so has the essence of a Sunday.
